Instructor-led discussion of Operations-level defensive product control. Officer selects focus. Topics that fit this sheet include: defensive vs offensive operations (Operations level is defensive only — no plugging, patching, or product transfer without Technician credential), the seven defensive control techniques (absorb — pads, vermiculite, sand, clay; adsorb — activated carbon; dam — earthen dam, overflow, underflow; dike; dilute — only when product chemistry allows; divert; retain; vapor suppression with fog stream or AFFF), water reactivity awareness (NEVER apply water to magnesium, sodium, lithium battery, anhydrous ammonia in some cases), liquid product control vs gas product control (gases require evacuation, vapor suppression, or letting it dissipate), drainage and waterway protection (storm drains, retention ponds, creeks — Peach County agricultural impact), unmanned monitor / fog stream operation from cold zone, and protective actions (shelter in place vs evacuation — based on ERG Table 1 and 3). Reference: NFPA 470 Ch. 5 (Operations), DOT ERG, OSHA 1910.120(q). Document specific topic and technique covered.

  1. 1. Identify when defensive control is appropriate and the limits of Operations level.
  2. 2. Select the appropriate defensive technique for the scenario discussed.
  3. 3. State the seven defensive techniques and give an example of each.
  4. 4. Identify products that are water-reactive.
  5. 5. Review department hazmat SOG and resource matrix.
