Instructor-led discussion of hazmat response within the Awareness/Operations level. Officer selects focus. Topics that fit this sheet include: identification (placards, labels, shipping papers, NFPA 704, container shape), Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) use — initial isolation and protective action distances, hazard classes (1-9), chemical and physical properties, PPE level selection (A/B/C/D), monitoring and detection (CGI, CO, multi-gas, radiation), product control techniques (absorb, adsorb, dam, dike, dilute, divert, retain, vapor suppression), decontamination (gross, technical, mass), incident command at hazmat scenes, hot/warm/cold zones, terrorist/WMD considerations, and lithium-ion battery / EV fire considerations. Reference: NFPA 470 (replaces 472/473), OSHA 1910.120, DOT ERG. Document specific topic covered.

  1. 1. Use the ERG to look up a product and identify isolation distances.
  2. 2. Identify the hazard class and basic properties of the product.
  3. 3. Describe the appropriate operational-level response.
  4. 4. Identify PPE level and decon needs.
  5. 5. Review department hazmat SOG and resource matrix.
