Instructor-led discussion of WMD / CBRNE awareness for first responders. Officer selects focus. Topics that fit this sheet include: CBRNE acronym (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive) and target indicators, chemical agents (nerve — sarin, VX; blister — mustard, lewisite; blood — cyanide, hydrogen cyanide; choking — chlorine, phosgene; riot control), biological agents (anthrax, plague, smallpox, ricin — recognition based on symptoms, not on-scene identification), radiological dispersal device (RDD or "dirty bomb" — conventional explosive + radioactive material), nuclear / improvised nuclear, secondary device awareness (the second bomb targeting first responders — this killed firefighters at Centennial Park 1996 / Atlanta clinic bombings 1997), staging and approach (uphill, upwind, upstream, perimeter at minimum 300 ft small / 1000 ft medium / 1/2 mile large device), suicide bomber / vehicle-borne IED indicators, signs of clandestine drug labs (meth labs — common rural Georgia, fentanyl synthesis), and notification chain (FBI, GBI, state hazmat team, JTTF). Reference: DOT ERG, NFPA 470, FEMA / CBRNE response guides. Document specific topic covered.

  1. 1. State the CBRNE acronym and give an example of each.
  2. 2. Identify three target indicators of a terrorist incident.
  3. 3. Apply standoff distances and perimeter setup.
  4. 4. Identify secondary device risk and response.
  5. 5. State the notification chain for a suspected WMD incident.
