Instructor-led discussion of officer-level personnel management and leadership. Officer selects focus. Topics that fit this sheet include: leadership styles (transformational, transactional, servant, situational), the difference between leadership and management, generational differences in the firehouse (Boomer / Gen X / Millennial / Gen Z) and how to lead across them, team building and crew cohesion, conflict resolution between members, addressing performance issues (verbal counseling, written counseling, formal discipline — the progressive discipline model), positive discipline and recognition, performance evaluations, mentoring and developing the next officers, fairness and consistency in policy enforcement, harassment / hostile work environment recognition and reporting (Title VII, EEOC), substance abuse identification and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), behavioral health awareness and connecting members to resources, and decision-making about probationary firefighters (the recommendation to retain or release).
