Crew or individual physical fitness training conducted under the department's occupational safety, health, and wellness program (NFPA 1500). NFPA 1500 requires members to develop and maintain a level of physical fitness to safely perform assigned duties, and requires the department to provide a health and fitness program. Sudden cardiac events and overexertion/strain injuries are among the leading causes of firefighter line-of-duty death and injury, so ongoing conditioning is documented here. Activities may include cardiovascular/aerobic work (run, row, bike, stair climb, ruck), muscular strength and endurance (weight lifting, calisthenics, kettlebell), flexibility/core work, and functional/job-related fitness such as full-gear workouts, hose drags, ladder and equipment carries, and victim drags. The officer or member selects the focus for the session. Companion references: NFPA 1583 (Health-Related Fitness Program) and NFPA 1582 (Medical Requirements).
