The department's full Structural Fire Control training day — the fire dynamics classroom that teaches members to read the building, followed by the live burn where they prove it. **4 hours minimum, up to 8 hours maximum**, depending on how many evolutions are run and how many crews rotate through; record the actual time span on the sign-in sheet. Draws on both department classes: reading smoke by volume/velocity/density/colour, flow path and door control, flashover and backdraft recognition, and what water does and where it has to land — then NFPA 1403 for the live portion, which is the controlling standard and to which the department live fire SOP defers. Covers the written pre-burn plan, two independent water sources, Class A fuel limits, the walk-through and two means of egress, every assigned position and its authority including the Safety Officer's power to halt any evolution regardless of rank, the pad's operational limits, NFPA 1584 medical monitoring, stop-work criteria, and the walk-out, after-action review and records. 1. Read smoke by volume, velocity, density and colour, and tie the read to a tactical decision.
2. Explain the flow path created by any opening and predict where the fire goes when it is made.
3. Recognise the warning signs of flashover and backdraft and state the action for each.
4. Describe what water does to a fire and where it has to land to do it.
5. State that NFPA 1403 is the controlling standard for live fire training and that the department live fire SOP defers to it.
6. Identify the two independent water sources in use and explain why two lines off one supply do not qualify.
7. Identify every assigned position and its authority, including the Safety Officer's authority to halt any evolution regardless of rank.
8. Demonstrate two means of egress from every area to be occupied.
9. Apply the operational limits for air readiness, on-air discipline, time on the fire floor and safety rotation.
10. State the NFPA 1584 medical monitoring requirements and the criteria that hold a member out.
11. Complete assigned evolutions and participate in the after-action review.
